Free JLPT level test
20 questions, about three minutes, no sign-up. Four questions from each level between N5 and N1, then you get your current level and where to start.
How the level is decided
Four questions come from each level, N5 through N1, for twenty in total. Getting three of four right counts as holding that level. Scoring stops at the first level you miss, so guessing your way through a higher level cannot paper over a gap below it.

How this differs from the real exam
This test covers vocabulary and kanji readings only. The real JLPT also tests reading and listening and is scaled-scored, so treat this as a guide to where to start rather than a prediction of a pass.
